Melbourne Fashion Week - Our Runway Debut

Updated: Dec 7, 2019

Yes, you read that right.... we showcased at Melbourne Fashion Week 2019 as a label. It was the most awesome event EVER, and we're bringing you this blog post to let you know all of the details. So, even if you weren't one of our amazing supporters sitting in a booth, drinking champagne while models sauntered down the runway, you'll still be able to have a taste of what the evening was all about. Continue reading for the perspective of our lead artist/designer Lilith, who curated the ten looks for our Spring Fashion Week debut.

THE LEADUP

The lead up to the event was pretty hectic. I was invited just within five weeks of the event by fashion designer Aron Katona via Instagram. I feel like this could've been a very constrained time frame, but since nailing a solo showcase last year, I have been hustling in the background making new designs to present, so I jumped at the opportunity.

I was required to put together a minimum of six looks, a maximum of ten. I decided to jump into the deep end and aim for the ten, made up equally of past and new looks.

THE LOOKS (OLD)

1. Graffiti Gal

Featuring some old favorites, we have the Berlin Jacket paired with The Melomaniac Crop and The Bf Sticker jeans. This beautiful model was not originally written down to walk for me, but I'm so glad that she was a part of my collection in the end, as her style and aura really complimented this look.

2. Serpent Queen

Here we have the Serpent Queen pants and Hound Jacket, which opened the runway. Although this isn't my best pairing, I had to admit I couldn't choose between having either out of the show.

3. Dragon Goddess

A staple in my showcase last year, I had to include The Dragon Trench. Camo, gold scales and fiery red hair... what a perfect match.

4. Bowie-Bella

This piece hasn't really seen the light of day much, and as one of my more recent works, and arguably one of my greatest achievements, it definitely couldn't sit M/FW out. It was also refreshing to see this piece worn by someone else, as I have always been the model to do so.

5. 27 Heartbreaker

Had to bust the ol' faithful out, paired with a couple of chain accessories. One of the eye catches of the runway, thanks to its vibrancy.

THE LOOKS CONT. (NEW)

6. Baroque Soldier

I had a Camo jumpsuit lying around for a year and a half and decided that it would be perfect for the runway (I could also smash out one look with just one item of clothing). Was a little directionless with this one, but tried to tie tigers, orchids and baroque details into one unifying design

7. Monster Vixen

A new experiment that went very well... I'm excited to move into bras and lingerie, which is what this look represents. I also brought out the airbrushing flame technique (as seen on the David Bowie Jumpsuit) to create a matching skirt. Paired this set with the Graffiti puffer jacket.

8. Miss Laneway

This started as a freestyle jacket on a vintage Faberget I did in my free time, inspired by the chaotic mess that you often see in Melbourne laneways. I decided that it NEEDED to be a co-ord set, so replicated the same design to a pair of shorts, to create this eighties-inspired look.

9. Killa Godzilla

Another stride in trench territory, this time incorporating the aggressiveness of Godzilla and the beauty of the cherry blossom on a long denim jacket. This piece was always a design I had in my mind, so the runway was the perfect opportunity to bring it to life.

10. Tigeress

Extra points to whoever can guess which celebrity inspired this look! Probably one of my favorite looks of the runway, as it's very different to what I've done in the past, and represents two new avenues for Zigentala - hoodies and shoes.
